Family Calls for Justice in Death of
Maurice McClain
5/6/06--The Detroit Coalition Against
Police Brutality is joining with the family of Maurice McClain,
a 17-year-old who was found hanging in his cell at the Wayne County
Jail last Saturday, April 29, 2006, to demand information regarding the
circumstances of his death.
McClain’s mother, Helen McClain, said that she has received no
communication from either the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department and/or
Detroit police investigators assigned to the case. Just prior to his
incarceration, Maurice McClain had been in the custody of the state
juvenile system.
The Coalition and the family are asking that there be an immediate
response to the questionable circumstances surrounding this death. “We
want to know whether other inmates or perhaps law enforcement officers
may have been involved in my son’s death,” said Helen McClain. “Our
family is totally overwhelmed by the shock of this incident, and we’re
asking that anyone who knows anything about this matter help us.”
